News from the CEV (www.cev.lu) - Luxembourg, January 11, 2010.
Mr. Richard Callicott, President of the English Volleyball Association who is also heading the British Volleyball Federation especially established along the way to the 2012 Olympics in London, visited this morning the CEV headquarters in the Grand-Duchy to discuss a few items along with President Andre Meyer and to share the latest developments in the UK approaching the 2012 Olympic Games.
Mr. Callicott described first the general guidelines of the strategic plan the English Volleyball Association has been working out for a bright future of that discipline, showing up an outstanding dynamism that left very good impressions also on the CEV President. This meeting served also as a chance to clarify the interest of England to become affiliated to one of the Zonal Associations that have been so far established under the umbrella of the European Volleyball Confederation. Some options are still open and the English Association will carry out an in-depth analysis that will help out in finding a solution to that issue.
Moreover, in order to strengthen the professional training of English officials towards the Olympics, CEV has agreed upon reserving to the UK an additional spot within the Control Committee of the next Women’s Junior European Championship in Serbia and upon having an English observer that will follow up on site all activities developed and staged with the local counterpart at the next CEV Congress in Ljubljana. The provision of some more similar chances is still under discussion and will be eventually endorsed at the next meeting of the CEV Board of Administration in late January in The Hague.
With Mr. Callicott having explicitly stressed the precious support Mr. Meyer has been giving as FIVB Vice President in the preparations for the next Olympics, the CEV President added that he is fully involved in supporting the organization of some test events that might also include the final round of the 2011 European League.
With the national teams being fully on schedule with their Olympic program even in spite of the deductions the British Volleyball Federation faced in the governmental funding, Mr. Callicott concluded expressing his hope that most probably for the 2011/2012 season some English teams might re-join – after quite a long break – the European Cups and namely the GM Capital Challenge Cup.
