Mark Kontopoulos

Chair

Mark has over two decades of leadership experience across all facets of volleyball and beach volleyball, both domestically and internationally.

 
He has served as President of Volleyball England’s Beach Commission and held several senior roles at major international events including the Athens 2004 and London 2012 Olympic Games, and various CEV and FIVB competitions. Certified as a CEV Technical Supervisor, Mark has offered advisory expertise to the UK Beach Tour board and is a co-founder of event management company SideOut and Chairman of SideOut Beach Volleyball Club.

He is actively involved in coaching top-level volleyball and beach volleyball, and delivering coaching courses and clinics in the UK and around the world in his capacity as a certified FIVB Instructor. As an athlete, he previously competed at both national and international level.
Beyond the volleyball arena, Mark is an experienced international corporate lawyer with  particular expertise in strategic alliances, dispute resolution and corporate governance. He has lectured in Sports Law, served on Volleyball England’s Judicial Panel and holds dual qualifications as a solicitor in England and Wales and attorney-at-law in the state of New York. 

 
 

Kate Richardson-Walsh

Independent Director - performance

Kate joins as INED with a performance expertise, bringing with her exceptional experience as one of Great Britain’s most respected sporting leaders. As captain of Team GB’s women’s hockey team, Kate led her side to Olympic gold in Rio 2016 and bronze in London 2012, earning 375 international caps and four Olympic appearances. Since retiring, she has become an influential coach, speaker, and leadership consultant, specialising in high-performance culture and athlete welfare.

 

Nabila Zulfiqar

Independent Director - Legal and Governance

Nabila has experience over two decades in professional regulation and legal compliance, public law and board level governance.

She brings a wealth of experience in leading adjudication, shaping organisational culture, and driving forward compliance frameworks.

She is currently a Chair of the FA National Serious Case Panel and its Judicial Appeals Panel, and Chair of the National League Trust. Previously, Nabila was Chief Adjudicator at the Solicitors Regulation Authority and Council Solicitor to the General Teaching Council for England.

In parallel, she has held multiple non-executive and independent roles, including as one of the first independent non-executive directors of the National League where she set up and Chaired its Risk Committee, Chair of the Architects Registration Board, and advisor to national bodies such as the Advertising Standards Authority.

Gail Robson

Senior Independent director - finance

A background working in finance, in particular the hospitality and real estate sectors, coupled with a strong interest in sport, health and fitness. In addition to being a chartered certified accountant, is also a qualified pilates instructor. After working for many years in the financial sector was approached initially to be a Non Executive Director for the Women in Property organisation. This was a position that she held for 4 years, during which time she contributed to the evolution of the organisation into its new limited company structure. Subsequent to this, the British Volleyball Federation (BVF) was looking for an Independent Non Executive director as they commenced the Paris Olympic cycle and, with her background in finance and other non executive experience,  she joined the board in 2019.  Since that time, she has contributed to the applications for, and management of, the UK Sport funding for both the Paris and now the LA Olympic cycles and other aspects of the financial and governance side of the BVF. 

Examples of previous roles held in the corporate sector include directorships at  hospitality brands Harbour International, Malmaison and Hotel du Vin. In addition, she was lead financial officer throughout major real estate development projects including the renovation of the Four Seasons Hotel, Park Lane, London. Prior to this held international controllership roles and spent several years in Monaco with a private tax and advisory firm.  French and English. speaker, with varying levels of fluency in several other European languages.

 

Jonathan McFadden

Northern Ireland CEO and representative

Currently holding the role of Sports Development Manager with Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council in Northern Ireland, Jonny has previously worked in performance sport with British Gymnastics in the role of National Talent Development Officer, and boasts over 15 years experience working in sport.  

Jonathan has played volleyball on and off for approximately 20 years and still currently competes in the Northern Ireland league, he was elected President of Northern Ireland Volleyball in January 2021

Carl Harwood

Volleyball Wales representative

Carl is the current chair of Volleyball Wales and has been a pinnacle figure in resurrecting the home nation within Wales in 2025.

Alongside this position, he is co-founder of Cardiff Beach Volleyball Club, having played the sport since 1997.

Within his area of expertise, he works full-time as Head of IT Hardware Engineer at BBC Wales.

Andrew Flemming

Scotland Chair and representative

Andrew Fleming has been the chair of Scottish Volleyball since 2024. He has worked within sport and physical activity for a number of years within Scotland.
